Spotting the Signs of Common Workplace Stressors

There are many examples of issues in the workplace that can affect you, your mental health and your ability to cope.  Below are a few examples of common workplace stressors that people experience.   Do any of these situations sound like you?

Workload Burnout

The expectation to do more with less creates unreasonable demands, leading to exhaustion and feeling resentful and sacrificed.

Constant Change

Dealing with change fatigue or job insecurity creates dread and anxiety; the ground feels perpetually shaky.

Toxic Environment

A culture of disrespect and dysfunction like bullying or gossiping leaves you feeling helpless, unsafe, or withdrawn at work.

Psychological Manipulation

Gaslighting erodes confidence by twisting facts, making you seriously doubt your own decisions, memory, and judgment.

FAQ's

Frequent Questions & Answers

If you decide to reach out for support, I encourage you to share at a level you feel comfortable with. I will not expect you to talk about things that you do not feel ready to or want to share. Counselling involves a degree of vulnerability and that can feel scary for someone who is not used to sharing their thoughts and feelings. I will support you where you are at and I commend you for having the courage to take that first step.

It is common to feel nervous about your first counselling session. You may feel unsure what to expect at first. Most people find that talking about what is happening brings them emotional relief. In your first session, you will have opportunity to talk about what’s happening at work. I will ask some questions to get to know you as it is very important you feel heard and understood. We need a clear picture of your situation so that you can determine options for change. By the end of your first appointment, you can expect to have clarity about your situation and some options for change to consider. You don’t need to feel like you have all the answers, we will figure things out together.

If you don’t have benefits through work or private insurance, I encourage you to reach out to your local Mental Health and Addictions Services office and/or your local Primary Health and Wellness Clinic. They may have services for you and will know the local community resources in your area that offer services on a sliding scale or at no cost.

The relationship between us is the most important part of counselling. Research shows that people feel better and get better when they have a strong alliance with their counselor. I encourage you to review my website and reach out if you have questions. My approach is warm, straightforward and grounded in years of experience helping people through life and work challenges. If we work together and you start to feel like we are not a strong fit, I encourage you to let me know. I am very open to feedback and value continuous learning and improvement in my work. My goal is for you to get the right support that truly helps you move forward, whether that is with myself or another counsellor. Your comfort and growth matters the most.

It is completely normal to feel uncomfortable at times during counselling. Talking about difficult experiences or emotions can bring up feelings you have been carrying for a while , and that can feel unsettling. These moments are part of the healing process, a sign that you are exploring things that matter and beginning to make sense of them. I will always move at your pace and provide a safe, supportive space where you can pause, reflect and take things slowly if you need to. Together we will work through what comes up with care and understanding.

I take privacy and confidentiality seriously and follow my professional association ethics and standards of practice. I work from a private office space where no one has access to see us or hear our conversation. I make some notes after our session, and they are stored in a secure program on my computer. What we talk about stays between us. I have a clinical supervisor and consult with her from time to time and she too is governed by the same ethics and standards of practice. There are some exceptions to confidentiality that you need to be aware of. If I have reason to believe you are at risk of harm to yourself or others. If i become aware of information that a child, elderly or vulnerable person is at risk of harm, I am required to take immediate action. A judge can issue a court order to subpoena myself or your records and Workman’s Compensation Board is exempt from HIPA legislation.

I have a Master’s Degree in Social Work and I am licensed with my provincial regulatory body. I am included in almost all insurance and benefit programs. I encourage you to contact your insurance plan or benefits program to ensure you have coverage before your first appointment. Also inquire how much coverage you have. If your plan does not cover the full cost of each session, you will need to pay the outstanding amount. Keep in mind that I issue receipts for payments you make, and counselling services may be included as health care for income tax purposes. My services are not covered by Saskatchewan Health care provincial services

I accept e-transfer, Visa and Master Card. You will be asked to make payment for my service before we start each session. I will email you a receipt after our session is complete.
